The Hives are inspired by The Sonics, but there style is so much more upbeat fender inspired while (telecaster sound to be excact) while The Sonics have Gibson guitar sound, low octave piano sax and synchronised instruments, this make a huge difference, even if they are playing the same things.
I am glad the lady said they did not compare to the fab 4 from LIverpool as there is aboslutely no compaison.. They did have a hook with these songs that goes to show it pays to stay simple and have groove people can relate to. So Hats off to the sonics who have survived generations. .
I saw both of these bands many times growing up in the mid-60′s and always considered the LP5 to be Beatles-wannabes. Not bad, but generic British invasion. The Sonics were in a league of their own….nobody back then sounded even remotely like them.
The 60′s Pacific NW rock sound kicked ass. The Sonics, The Kingsmen, Paul Revere and the Raiders. Such a soulful, ballsy brand of rock and roll. Nothin’ complicated here, just an irresistable guitar groove, pounding drums, a manic sax break and soul shouting that would have Little Richard shouting “lord, have mercy!”
Great band out of the Pac. NW but they never could top the Liverpool Five that band out of England who invaded our area and stole our hearts in the 60′s.

Green Day are the No.1 rip-off band so don’t be surprised… LOL!
i wouldn’t be surprised if the sonics sued greenday for use of practically the same riff
